Former Germany international Patrick Helmes slams Bayern Munich’s signing of Nicolas Jackson, calling it overpriced and questioning his ability to replace Harry Kane.
Patrick Helmes, a former Germany international, has expressed his disappointment with Bayern Munich’s Deadline Day signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.
According to reports, Bayern paid €16.5 million for the loan, with a €65 million purchase option that becomes an obligation if Jackson meets certain appearance requirements. Helmes believes this deal is “completely overpriced”.
Helmes’ main concern is that Jackson is not on the same level as Harry Kane, the star striker Bayern Munich currently relies on. “He’s no Harry Kane,” Helmes bluntly stated. While acknowledging Jackson’s quality in the Premier League, Helmes thinks he’s only a backup for Kane, not a suitable replacement.
The pundit also questioned the wisdom of the purchase clause, suggesting that Bayern might struggle to justify the additional €65 million required to sign Jackson permanently. Helmes doesn’t expect the club to exercise this option, given the hefty price tag.
Jackson’s move to Bayern Munich was finalised after a dramatic transfer saga. Chelsea initially pulled out of the deal due to Liam Delap’s injury, but Bayern re-entered negotiations, securing a revised agreement with an obligation to buy rather than an option. The Senegal international has signed a deal that could see him stay at Bayern until 2030.
Despite the criticism, Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund believes Jackson will add another dimension to their attacking play. Freund highlighted Jackson’s speed, goal-scoring ability, and positive attitude as valuable assets for the team.
