Defender will not serve time in jail but his representatives have also vowed to appeal the decision
Harry Maguire has received a 15-month suspended prison sentence from a Greek court following the long-running legal case stemming from an incident on the island of Mykonos in 2020.
The Manchester United defender had originally been arrested after a brawl outside a nightclub during a summer holiday, where he was accused of assault, resisting arrest, and attempting to bribe police officers. Maguire has consistently denied wrongdoing since the case first emerged.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Maguire was detained for two days before being found guilty of repeated bodily harm, violence against public employees and attempted bribery. He initially received a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days along with a fine.
However, under Greek judicial procedure, his appeal automatically nullified that conviction pending a full retrial in a higher court. The case has dragged on since 2020.
Following the latest ruling, the 32-year-old has again been convicted on the charges but will not serve prison time because the sentence is suspended. There is also no financial penalty imposed.
It is understood Maguire’s lawyers intend to challenge the verdict in Greece’s supreme court. The defender has previously rejected opportunities to settle the matter privately as he seeks full exoneration.
Maguire was not present in court for Wednesday’s hearing. Instead he remained with United’s squad preparing for their Premier League fixture away at Newcastle on Wednesday. The England defender has started United’s last seven games.
