Centre-back “delighted” to stay at Old Trafford for at least eight seasons

Harry Maguire has taken a pay cut to extend his contract at Manchester United by a year, with the option of an additional year.

The 33-year-old defender’s previous deal was due to expire in the summer. His future had been uncertain after missing many games through injury when Ruben Amorim was at the club. By his own admission, the Portuguese was always ready to play him when he was fit.

Maguire regained full fitness in January and has since re-established himself as a key figure, playing every game under Michael Carrick until he received a red card against Bournemouth in March.

The defender’s form has recently earned him a recall to the England team. He made two appearances during the latest international window, even if Thomas Tuchel has made clear he still has a mountain to climb to make the World Cup squad.

“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour,” Maguire said after the deal was announced. “It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”

United decided to secure Maguire’s experience and leadership following confirmation that Casemiro will leave at the end of the season. The centre-back has made 266 appearances since joining from Leicester City in 2019 for £80m, winning both the FA Cup and League Cup.

He was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shortly after his arrival but lost the role under Erik ten Hag in 2023, when the club considered selling him.

Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Maguire’s influence, saying: “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.”
