Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo were announced in Thomas Tuchel’’s latest 35-man squad
Manchester United’s Harry Maguire was sent off against Bournemouth mere hours after his latest recall to the England squad. The 33-year-old was adjudged to have denied Bournemouth a clear goalscoring opportunity when he grabbed Evanilson despite being the last man.
The centre-back had earlier forced an own goal by James Hill to put United 2-1 ahead on the night. The subsequent penalty after the England international’s dismissal allowed Bournemouth to level. The game ultimately ended 2-2.
Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo were recalled to the England squad by Thomas Tuchel after the German coach named a sizeable 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
Tuchel wants to rotate heavily across the two fixtures as he fine-tunes his options ahead of the summer’s World Cup. Maguire and Mainoo’s recall comes after the improvement in their fortunes at United.
Both players had been on the fringes earlier this season during Ruben Amorim’s tenure, but have started every match played under interim coach Michael Carrick, with United the league’s most in-form team in that period.
Tuchel has also handed opportunities to returning players such as Fikayo Tomori, Lewis Hall, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke, while Everton’s James Garner earns his first senior call-up. Tino Livramento also returns to the fold.

However, the absence of several high-profile names has raised eyebrows. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Morgan Gibbs-White and Ollie Watkins have all been left out, placing their World Cup prospects under increasing scrutiny.
Tuchel confirmed that a group of senior players, including Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Harry Kane, will join the camp later. They will miss the first friendly but it’s all part of arrangements to manage the players’ workload. Jude Bellingham is included but will only appear in a limited capacity after his recent injury.
“We will not take any risks with Jude,” said Tuchel. “We will continue his progress and integration into team training. The best-case scenario is that he gets some minutes against Japan.”
The manager also addressed the growing hype around teenage prospect Max Dowman, opting against an immediate call-up but certainly leaving the door open for the future.
“He has put himself into the spotlight,” said Tuchel. “He’s a fantastic talent. The reality is he’s not a regular starter. He’s in the best environment possible, learning from the very best.
“We always have the chance to call him up for the World Cup. There is no need to call him up now to increase the pressure but we have all the options.”
