Defender accused of acting “in an improper manner” and using “abusive” words against match officials
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been charged by the English Football Association following his red card in the draw against Bournemouth.
Maguire was sent off in the 78th minute by referee Stuart Attwell after conceding a penalty, which Junior Kroupi converted to secure a 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium. The charge relates to Maguire’s conduct towards fourth official Matt Donohue following his dismissal.
A statement from the FA on Wednesday read: “Harry Maguire has been charged after being sent off in the 78th minute of Man Utd’s Premier League match against Bournemouth on March 20.
“It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal. Harry Maguire has until 2 April to provide a response.”
The England international is already set to serve a one-match suspension for the red card, ruling him out of United’s next league fixture against Leeds on 13 April.
United could be boosted in defence by the return of Lisandro Martinez, who is nearing a comeback from injury and may partner Leny Yoro at centre-back. However, Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined with a back injury that has kept him out since November.
