Serhou Guirassy struck late as Borussia Dortmund beat Wolfsburg 2-1 away, moving within three points of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race.

Borussia Dortmund continued their push for the Bundesliga title with a dramatic 2-1 away win over VfL Wolfsburg, extending their Bundesliga winning run to five matches and tightening the pressure on leaders Bayern Munich. Knowing Bayern had already dropped points, Dortmund arrived at the Volkswagen Arena fully aware that victory would significantly narrow the gap at the top.

Despite Dortmund’s intent, it was Wolfsburg who started brighter and posed the greater attacking threat in the first half. Mohamed Amoura had a golden chance to open the scoring midway through the opening period when he raced through on goal, but the forward squandered the opportunity, lifting his effort well over the bar with only Gregor Kobel to beat.

Dortmund controlled possession but initially struggled to turn that dominance into clear chances. Their first real opening arrived around the half-hour mark when Julian Ryerson found space inside the box, only to blaze his shot over despite having time to compose himself. Moments later, Ryerson turned provider, cutting the ball back for Maximilian Beier, whose deflected strike cannoned off the crossbar.

As the interval approached, Dortmund’s pressure finally told. In the 38th minute, Ryerson delivered a dangerous corner and Julian Brandt timed his run perfectly, glancing a clever header in at the near post to give the visitors a deserved lead heading into the break.

Wolfsburg responded positively after half-time, continuing a recent trend that had seen both teams score in 11 of their previous 12 matches. Seven minutes into the second period, Konstantinos Koulierakis rose highest to meet Christian Eriksen’s pinpoint free-kick, powering a header past Kobel to bring the hosts level.

The momentum swung firmly in Wolfsburg’s favour as Dortmund struggled to reassert control. Amoura was again presented with a clear sight of goal but failed to make it count, firing straight at Kobel, while substitute Lovro Majer came agonisingly close on 80 minutes when his header rattled the crossbar.

Just as Wolfsburg seemed most likely to score, Dortmund struck. Fábio Silva slipped Serhou Guirassy through in the closing minutes, and the striker made no mistake, curling his only shot on target into the far corner to snatch a vital victory.

The late blow was crushing for Daniel Bauer’s side, who remain deep in relegation trouble, while Dortmund move to within three points of Bayern as they chase a first Bundesliga title since the 2011/12 season.
