England defender is deeply disappointed at being denied the chance to join Arne Slot’s side
Marc Guehi is considering giving up the Crystal Palace captaincy following the dramatic collapse of his deadline-day move to Liverpool.
The England defender had been close to completing a £35m transfer but it broke down after the club were unable to find a replacement in time, as Palace had agreed with manager Oliver Glasner earlier in the window.
Glasner is understood to have threatened to resign if the deal went ahead, arguing the club did not keep up their end of the bargain.
Palace chairman Steve Parish had reluctantly accepted Liverpool’s offer, and Guehi had already undergone the first stage of his medical. A deal sheet had been lodged with the Premier League and a private jet arranged to take Guehi to Merseyside. The club had even prepared a farewell video, which has since leaked online.
But with hours left before Monday’s 7pm deadline, Parish reversed the decision following Glasner’s ultimatum. The last-minute change left Guehi frustrated, with those close to the defender describing him as deeply disappointed at being denied the chance to join Arne Slot’s side.
Guehi had been respectful to Palace and continued training and playing without a fuss, in contrast to other players who went on strike, including Alexander Isak, now at Liverpool, and Yoane Wissa, now at Newcastle from Brentford.
Although he is expected to continue playing for Palace, Guehi is said to be reflecting on whether he should remain captain, a role he has held since last season. Several Palace players are also thought to have been unhappy at how the situation was handled.
