“Sometimes you need a process and need time,” says Manchester City boss
Pep Guardiola has said Ruben Amorim is “a top manager” and offered solidarity after the Portuguese was sacked by Manchester United on Monday.
Amorim was dismissed just over a year after he joined United on the promise of implementing a clear system of playing. The 40-year-old ultimately fell out with the club hierarchy over his tactical ideas and January recruitment.
Guardiola said coaches were getting less and less time even when they needed it.
“It is a fact, [They get] less time,” Manchester City’s coach said. “Like what happened with Enzo [Maresca].
“I cannot say anything on Chelsea or Man Utd but all I can say is Ruben [Amorim] is a top manager. I wish him all the best in the future.”
Guardiola himself previously said he was lucky not to be sacked during a bad spell in 2024 when his side lost nine out of 12 games from October to December.
“They hire you for your ideas and you are sacked for the results,” Guardiola said. “Sometimes you need a process and need time.
“They [Man Utd] drew three games. The gaps are so small. They had a lot of absences, like we have right now, it is difficult to cope. Africa Cup [of Nations] and injuries. The reason why? To be honest, I don’t know.”
