Both Ederson and Ortega have been linked with an exit from Manchester City; Guardiola says the club are “linked with 500 players in every transfer window”

Pep Guardiola has played down speculation over a possible summer overhaul of Manchester City’s goalkeeping ranks, insisting that both Ederson and Stefan Ortega are expected to stay at the club despite mounting rumours surrounding the former’s future.

The City boss addressed the swirling reports linking Ederson with a move to Saudi Arabia and suggesting a lack of confidence in Ortega, whose contract runs out next summer. But Guardiola appeared to quash talk of incoming reinforcements, despite the club’s reported interest in Porto’s Diogo Costa and Espanyol’s Joan Garcia.

“I don’t know much about goalkeepers joining or leaving the club,” Guardiola told reporters. “I tell them to stay. We’ve talked about the situation of the squad, and the two goalkeepers we have will stay.”

Guardiola’s comments come as a surprise given the uncertainty surrounding both goalkeepers. Ederson, whose form and fitness have been erratic over the past 12 months, has been on the radar of Saudi Pro League clubs since last summer. While no official bids have emerged yet, City may be tempted to cash in on the 30-year-old Brazilian if a significant offer materialises.

Meanwhile, Ortega is entering the final year of his contract and there is no extension in sight. With City apparently exploring alternatives, doubts remain over the German’s future.

When asked directly about Garcia, Guardiola acknowledged the talent of the Espanyol goalkeeper but dismissed any links as speculation.

“Joan Garcia is a really good goalkeeper, but City are linked with 500 players in every transfer window,” said Guardiola.

“He’s an Espanyol player and I don’t know what happens, but I’m told by the Espanyol guys [at a golf event] he’s an extraordinary goalkeeper. The references we have are very good.”
