United have a sell-on clause that allows them to benefit significantly from any future sale of their former player

Manchester United could miss out on a financial windfall after Marseille president Pablo Longoria indicated the club have no intention of selling Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood has been one of Ligue 1’s standout performers since joining Marseille from United in the summer of 2024. He tied with Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele for goals scored in the French league last season, helping Marseille qualify for the Champions League. He has carried that form into this season and is currently leading the Ligue 1 scoring chart with 11 goals in 15 games.

United inserted a sell-on clause in the contract with Marseille when they sold Greenwood, believed to be around 40-50%, according to Sky Sports.

It will allow them to benefit significantly from any future sale of the player. With Greenwood firing at elite level, he is undoubtedly attracting interest from other clubs, and getting a significant cut from a transfer fee for the player would do much to improve United’s own spending powers in the era of financial fair play.

“We are very happy with Mason’s evolution,” said Longoria. “It is a daily work of everyone around the athlete. We know his talent but the work that [manager Roberto] De Zerbi does with him is extraordinary.

“Mason is working to improve his level and the way he sees football collectively, which is his biggest evolution. We are aware of having a very important player who puts himself at the service of the group, we want a continuity with him. It’s hard to have some key players, but you need a collective.”
