Palace manager is one of the bookmakers’ favourites to take over at Old Trafford

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has refused to discuss the prospects of taking over the Manchester United job.

Glasner is one of the bookmakers’ favourites to step into the hot seat after Ruben Amorim was sacked on Monday following a falling out with the club hierarchy.

The Austrian is one of the most highly rated managers in the Premier League after leading Palace to their first-ever major trophy – the FA Cup – last season and bringing European football to Selhurst Park.

“I’m not allowed to bet, I don’t look at it,” Glasner said about his odds of taking over at Old Trafford. “I also can’t give insider information.

“I’m Crystal Palace manager. It makes no sense and it’s a waste of time for you to ask me any more questions on it.”

Glasner’s contract at Palace is set to expire at the end of the season, and he has delayed signing a new contract. Rumours are that he is keeping his options open, leaving the possibility of moving to a more high-profile job. Incidentally, United are looking to hire an interim coach for now and delay their appointment of a new permanent manager till the summer.

Regarding his contract situation, Glasner said: “You can sign a new contract, like managers in the Premier League did this year or at the end of last year, and they aren’t there any more. You can win trophies, six months later you aren’t the manager there any more.

“So, I think the length of the contract doesn’t mean anything about your future. Even if I sign a new contract, you could ask me. Ruben Amorim said he had 18 months left in his press conference and he’s not the manager anymore.

“There’s one situation that keeps you in your job as a manager and that is being successful.”
