Tottenham boss Thomas Frank says Cristian Romero’s social media comments regarding the club have been dealt with internally

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has confirmed that Cristian Romero’s recent public criticism of the club’s transfer policy has been addressed internally, though he didn’t confirm whether the club captain faced any disciplinary action.

Romero sparked controversy on Monday when he posted on Instagram shortly after the transfer window closed, revealing that he had played through illness in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City. The Argentine defender described it as “disgraceful” that Tottenham were left with only 11 fit players, a comment that quickly drew attention across social media.

His frustration echoed the feelings of many Tottenham supporters, particularly given the club’s limited activity in the January window. Since signing Conor Gallagher on January 14, Tottenham failed to strengthen further, despite losing nine players to injury since the start of 2026.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester United, Frank avoided directly interpreting Romero’s comments. “If you want to know what he meant, you, of course, need to ask him. That is the right way to take that question.”

Frank did, however, defend Romero’s character, describing him as an intensely driven and emotional competitor. “Cuti is a very passionate character and player. He wants to leave everything on the pitch; he is very ambitious and wants to win every time,” he explained.

The Tottenham manager acknowledged that such passion can sometimes boil over. “Sometimes when you are like that, there can be an outburst, which happened this time,” Frank said, before confirming that the situation had been handled behind closed doors.

When pressed on whether Romero had been fined or disciplined, particularly given he had also voiced frustrations on social media after a 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth on January 7, Frank declined to give specifics. Instead, he stressed that written messages can be easily misinterpreted and reiterated that Romero’s comments ultimately reflect his desire to win and succeed with Tottenham.
