Former Chelsea player Pat Nevin doubts the Blues’ title chances due to their centre-back situation and inconsistency.

Chelsea’s summer spending spree saw the arrival of six new signings, including five attackers, but injuries and inconsistency have marred the Blues’ start to the season. Despite a thrilling last-minute win over Liverpool, which moved them onto 11 points from seven games, Chelsea still sit five points behind leaders Arsenal.

Former Chelsea player Pat Nevin believes the team’s centre-back situation is a major cause for concern. With multiple injuries to defenders, Chelsea have been forced to rely on their sixth and seventh choice centre-backs, which Nevin believes is a significant obstacle to mounting a title challenge.

Nevin’s concerns are valid, given Chelsea’s struggles in defence this season. The team has conceded nine goals in seven games, highlighting the need for a solid partnership at the back. Meanwhile, Arsenal have been impressive, with only three goals conceded, demonstrating their defensive strength.

Despite the challenges, Chelsea have shown glimpses of quality, particularly in attack. The arrivals of Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Estevao have added depth and firepower to the squad. However, Nevin believes it’s unlikely Chelsea will mount a serious title challenge this season.

“Chelsea aren’t ready yet,” Nevin said. “Their centre-back situation is a cause for concern; you can’t win or challenge for a league title when you’re using your sixth and seventh choice centre-backs.”

Chelsea’s priority should be addressing their defensive issues and finding a consistent centre-back partnership. If they can resolve these problems, they may yet prove themselves genuine title contenders.
