“I’ve been a bit frustrated by lack of goals,” midfielder confesses
Phil Foden has proved he can still score goals after firing twice to help Manchester City edge Leeds United, according to the midfielder.
The England international gave City the lead in the second minute and then scored again in stoppage time to rescue a 3-2 win, after City had surrendered a comfortable 2-0 lead in the second half.
“I was so hungry to play today, not to prove to anyone else but to prove to myself that I can still score goals,” said Foden. “I’ve been a bit frustrated and it was in the back of my mind to put it right and I was delighted to put two away today.”
City bossed the game in the first half following Foden and Josko Gvardiol’s strikes, but they were pegged back after the break when Leeds substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin inspired a sensational comeback.
“We were in full control, but they changed it around in the second half, changed the system and we couldn’t seem to get going,” Foden said. “It was a frustrating half but when we had a short break, the manager got us together to adapt to their formation and we started playing again.”
With the game wide open in stoppage time, it was Foden who found space to slam the decider past Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri.
“It’s right up there with one of the wildest games,” said the midfielder. “We put on the pressure and I finally managed to find a bit of space and get my shot off and find the bottom of the net. Really happy with it but there are still things we can improve.”
