Gianni Infantino says the world football governing body is committed to ensuring appropriate action is taken

Fifa’s anti-racism group will reach out to Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo to offer its support, after the winger was racially abused during a match against Liverpool at Anfield.

Semenyo scored twice in the second half of a thrilling opening day for the Premier League, but in the first half the game was briefly paused after referee Anthony Taylor was alerted to the abuse from the stands.

A middle-aged man from Liverpool was then escorted out of the stadium at half-time and later arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, as confirmed by Merseyside Police.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino condemned the abuse directed at the player, describing the incident as unacceptable and pledging the governing body’s full support for the Ghana international.

Infantino said: “Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination. Antoine’s courage and performance on the pitch, despite such adversity, is a powerful example of strength and dignity for players worldwide.

“The Players’ Voice Panel, established as part of the five pillars against racism adopted by Fifa Congress in 2024, will be in touch with Antoine and is monitoring these situations closely.

“We are committed to ensuring that players are respected and protected, and that competition organisers and law enforcement authorities take appropriate action.”

Both Liverpool Football Club and the Premier League also issued statements after the match condemning the act and vowing to take action.

The Premier League said: “The incident at Anfield will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs.

“Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.”
