FIFA have fined the Nigeria Football Federation and DR Congo Football Association following disciplinary issues during their 2026 World Cup qualifying play-off match.

FIFA has imposed financial sanctions on both the Nigeria Football Federation and the DR Congo Football Association following incidents during their heated 2026 World Cup qualifying play-off clash last year.

The fine is for the World Cup playoffs, which saw DR Congo defeat the Super Eagles of Nigeria 4–3 on penalties after a dramatic draw in regulation time.

During the game, Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria the lead before Meschack Elia equalised for DR Congo, forcing the match into a penalty shootout that eventually sent the Leopards through to the intercontinental play-offs.

According to FIFA’s disciplinary review, the Nigerian federation was punished for breaches relating to stadium order and security after spectators were found to have thrown objects during the match. The offence falls under Articles 17 and 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, resulting in a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs.

The Congolese federation, however, received a larger sanction of 5,000 Swiss francs after supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the contest, an action that violates Article 17.2.d of the disciplinary regulations.

The disciplinary ruling arrives while tensions remain over Nigeria’s formal protest regarding the alleged use of ineligible players by DR Congo during the play-off. The complaint, reportedly highlighted by journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, listed several overseas-born players who featured in the match, including Lionel Mpasi, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Arthur Masuaku, and Cédric Bakambu.

While the case remains under scrutiny, DR Congo are preparing for their intercontinental play-off, where they could face either New Caledonia national football team or the Jamaica national football team for a place at the next FIFA World Cup.
