Manchester United manager says new signings can reduce the reliance on the playmaker
Ruben Amorim believes Bruno Fernandes will be able to influence matches more next season thanks to the new additions around him.
Speaking after Manchester United’s 2-1 friendly win over West Ham, the United manager admitted Fernandes worked very hard for the team last season but said the midfielder will now have more help, both in leadership and in terms of creativity on the pitch.
“I feel that he has more players now to help him to lead the group and that is a good thing,” said Amorim. “He is our leader and really important, not just on the field, but off the field.
“He leads by example. He works really hard, is always available and, sometimes, he plays with pain.
“Sometimes, the problem is he gets frustrated and loses a little bit of focus of his job. Sometimes, he wants to help his teammates so much, it is not the best thing to do.”
United signed two Premier League-proven attackers this summer in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Amorim has also suggested that youngster Kobbie Mainoo could play a key role next season.
“Last year, I felt sometimes I pushed Bruno back to have more possession in the build-up and we miss him near the box,” said Amorim.
“With different characteristics from Bryan and Matheus Cunha – and I really like Kobbie Mainoo’s game – he will have more help this season.”
