Manchester United 2-1 West Ham: No debut yet for Mbeumo as Amorim’s side get first pre-season win

Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Manchester United registered their first win of pre-season with a 2-1 victory over West Ham at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

United created chances from early on. Rasmus Hojlund went close twice in the first half hour, either side of a Bruno Fernandes penalty kick that gave United the lead after Alphonse Areola had fouled Ayden Heaven in the box.

Full back Patrick Dorgu and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo both impressed but there was no debut for Bryan Mbeumo after his £71m move to United, with Ruben Amorim saying that the player was still a bit behind in fitness.

United played on the front foot and their pressing caused problems for West Ham, eventually leading to a mistake from Areola in the second half and Fernandes converted.

Amorim made sweeping changes just past the hour mark but United’s performance dropped and West Ham pulled one back through Jarrod Bowen.

The Hammers pushed for an equaliser late on but United were able to see out the win. The Red Devils’ pre-season activity in the United States continues with matches against Bournemouth (31 July) and Everton (3 August) before a return to England ahead of the new season.
