Roma secured a 3-0 win over Celtic in the UEFA Europa League.

Roma handed Celtic a 3-0 defeat in the UEFA Europa League, with Evan Ferguson scoring a brace as Wilfried Nancy’s side suffered their second home loss in as many matches.

Roma took the lead in just six minutes, with Liam Scales scoring an own goal, leaping highest at Matias Soule’s corner to send the ball into the net.

Roma continued to press, and they grabbed a deserved second goal nine minutes before half-time, with Zeki Celik squaring for Ferguson to turn home his first UEL goal.

The hosts continued to struggle, and they conceded a third goal in stoppage time, with Soule drilling a ball into Ferguson, who turned and powered his second past Kasper Schmeichel.

Celtic had chances to get back into the game, but they were unable to capitalize. Reo Hatate was played through on goal, but he could only balloon his shot over. The hosts were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, but Arne Engels’ effort struck the post and bounced out.

Kelechi Iheanacho was one of three players Nancy threw on at the break to change the game, but the Nigerian was guilty of spurning a huge opportunity eight minutes after the restart, missing the target from 10 yards out.

Celtic kept plugging away, but they were unable to score, and Roma were content to see out the game.

The win takes Roma within a point of the top eight in the league phase, while Celtic are left clinging onto the 24th and final qualifying place. The Giallorossi were denied a fourth goal, with Leon Bailey’s effort ruled out for offside.

The defeat is a disappointing result for Celtic, who had hopes of making a strong start to the Europa League campaign. However, they will be looking to bounce back from this defeat and secure a place in the knockout stages.
