Former United defender urges team to “get the ball into” their striker

Manchester United are making life difficult for new signing Benjamin Sesko by playing the ball “around” the striker instead of into him, former club defender Rio Ferdinand has warned.

The 22-year-old forward joined from RB Leipzig this summer in a £74m move and has made two appearances, although he is still waiting for his first start under Ruben Amorim.

He came off the bench in United’s opening two Premier League fixtures, but Ferdinand was uncomfortable with the way the team played on both occasions when the striker came onto the pitch, saying he felt Sesko was being underused by his teammates.

“Get the ball into him,” said Ferdinand. “He isn’t going to be an easy day’s work. Get it into him and make them defend. But we are playing it around him.

“Sometimes it’s like really basic, fundamental things. Get it into someone who can cause problems but we go against that.

“So that was my main concern, you are not getting to see who he is.”

Ferdinand added that United’s attacking play has not given supporters a chance to properly assess their new striker.

“I would rather you play it into him and he look rubbish so we know what we’ve got, because right now I don’t know what he is or what he’s doing,” said the former United defender.

“I’m not pointing the finger but you have got to help your teammates find their feet in the team.”
