Former Manchester United defender says Mount’s return could feel like “a new signing” for Ruben Amorim
Rio Ferdinand believes Mason Mount is ready to make a proper impact at Manchester United this season after a frustrating two years at the club marred by injury.
Mount joined United from Chelsea in July 2023 in a deal worth £60m but has been limited to just 19 starts across all competitions for two seasons.
Now back to full fitness, the midfielder has featured regularly during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, scoring an excellent goal in the final game against Everton and showing signs of regaining sharpness.
Ferdinand told talkSPORT Mount’s return could feel like “a new signing” for Ruben Amorim.
I saw him out in Chicago and one of the things I said to him was, ‘How are you feeling?’” said Ferdinand. “Because he’s been robbed of any minutes really for injury. It’s been really disappointing to see.
“Being injured and in the shadows, I never had that at a new club. That is so depressing. It can take your soul away at times. I’m sure he’s been in some dark moments.”
Mount established himself as a senior player at Chelsea, becoming a key figure under different managers and playing a central role in their 2021 Champions League win, where he provided the assist for Kai Havertz’s winner.
His versatility and work rate earned him regular selection under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, as well as Gareth Southgate in the England team, and Ferdinand is convinced the midfielder has a lot to offer United.
Ferdinand said: “He has the quality. He has the work ethic. He has the legs. He has the ability to be a really good top player. I just hope he gets the time to play minutes to show himself.”
