Enzo Maresca Admits Chelsea ‘Tried Something New’ in Flamengo Defeat

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca reveals that his team “tried something new” during their 3-1 defeat to Flamengo, potentially looking ahead to next season.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted that his team “tried something new” during their 3-1 defeat to Flamengo at the Club World Cup. The Blues were favorites to win, but they gave up a 1-0 lead and ultimately lost to the Brazilian side.

Maresca attributed the loss to the team’s inability to recover from conceding two goals in a short period, followed by Nicolas Jackson’s red card just a minute after coming on as a substitute.

“Unfortunately, we conceded two goals in a very short period, a very short moment — and then the red card,” Maresca said. “Then it’s very complicated to come back into the game.”

The Chelsea boss praised Flamengo, saying they deserved to win. He also hinted that the team was experimenting with new tactics, potentially looking ahead to next season. “I think we tried to do something different during the game, also for next season,” Maresca said.

Maresca wouldn’t comment on whether the experiment had backfired, simply stating that the team “tried something new.” He also hadn’t spoken to Jackson about the red card, saying there was nothing to discuss given the nature of the incident.

Chelsea now faces Esperance Sportive de Tunis on Wednesday, with Maresca determined to lead his team to victory. “Now we have one more game, and we are going to try to win the next one,” he said.
