Enzo Fernández is expected to regain the captaincy at Chelsea despite internal sanctions
Enzo Fernández is reportedly set to captain Chelsea again despite recently being sanctioned by the club for comments that appeared to hint at a potential move to Real Madrid. The midfielder remains one of the key leadership figures within the squad.
Fernández’s future came under scrutiny after he cast doubt over his long-term commitment to Chelsea. Although he did not explicitly request a transfer, the club viewed his stance as crossing the line, leading to internal disciplinary action and his omission from the FA Cup victory over Port Vale.
Head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed that the Argentine would also miss the Premier League clash with Manchester City. However, the manager has been keen to avoid damaging their relationship and has indicated he plans to reintegrate the midfielder quickly.

Rosenior is expected to welcome Fernández back for the upcoming fixture against Manchester United. With club captain Reece James still sidelined through injury, Fernández is tipped to reclaim the armband upon his return to action.
The 25-year-old remains part of Chelsea’s leadership group and is considered one of the most vocal personalities in what is one of the Premier League’s youngest squads. His influence within the dressing room has reportedly played a major role in the decision. Not everyone is convinced by the idea of restoring Fernández immediately as captain. Some sources suggest he is merely one of several co-captains rather than the clear vice-captain, indicating that the leadership structure remains fluid.
Meanwhile, Cole Palmer, who wore the armband during Chelsea’s 7–0 win over Port Vale, is not expected to captain the side against Manchester City. Despite calling it a proud moment, Palmer is seen as lower in the leadership hierarchy.
Instead, Moisés Caicedo is widely expected to lead the team against City. The midfielder has already captained Chelsea twice this season and is viewed as a more senior figure, though his status could depend on avoiding suspension.
Beyond the captaincy debate, Fernández’s long-term future remains uncertain. Reports suggest he is still interested in joining Real Madrid, although Chelsea’s high asking price and ongoing contract negotiations could complicate any potential move as discussions continue.
