Howe was originally expected to leave hospital by Sunday, but will now remain a bit longer while he receives specialist care

Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe will remain absent from the touchline for the club’s upcoming fixtures against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa as he continues to recover from pneumonia.

The 47-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Tyneside last weekend after experiencing illness for several days. He was not in the dugout for Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Manchester United, but he watched the game from his hospital bed. His assistant manager Jason Tindall said after the game that he received a text from Howe congratulating him on the performance.

Tindall and joint assistant manager Graeme Souness oversaw the team performance against the visiting Red Devils and Howe had no input in the game.

Newcastle released a statement on Saturday saying that Howe was conscious and talking with his family, but they did not specify his illness. It has now been revealed that Howe is recovering from pneumonia.

The head coach released a statement on Monday expressing his gratitude: “A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family.

“I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I’m receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”

A return date has not been specified, but Newcastle will remain hopeful that their manager, who has led the club to their first domestic trophy win in 70 years, will be back as soon as possible as the club vies for third place in the Premier League and a spot in next season’s Champions League.
