Pundit says the 48-year-old is calm and his teams play good football
Roy Keane believes current Newcastle boss Eddie Howe would make a brilliant manager for Manchester United.
After sacking Ruben Amorim on Monday, United are assessing their options for an interim coach to guide the team till the end of the season, when they intend to appoint a new permanent manager.
The club have been linked with various managers of various profiles, including Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, and Marseille’s Roberto De Zerbi. Gary Neville suggested United needed a more established and experienced coach and recommended current England manager Thomas Tuchel and current Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti.
“I’d go with Eddie Howe,” said Keane. “I like him. I like what he’s done. He’s managed a lot of games. When his teams are at it, they’ll play good football. He has his critics, but I like what he’s done at Newcastle.
“He’s managed seven or 800 games. He’s still a young man. I love his calmness. Maybe Man Utd need a little bit of that.
“We’ve seen with previous [appointments], United like people with emotions, but he’s got that calmness. The job he’s done at Newcastle, Champions League and winning a cup, I’d be happy to see him go in there.”
Former United player, assistant manager, technical director and U-18 coach, Darren Fletcher, is currently in charge of the team. He led them to a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday and will be in the dugout in the FA Cup game against Brighton on Sunday.
Fletcher had previously been in contention to stay until the end of the season, but he is now expected to step down while the club appoint either Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick as interim.
“Do I think Fletcher is the man to do it? Absolutely not,” Keane said. “But he’s stepping in to do it for a few weeks and a few months. He’ll probably win a few games. If they go with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], good luck to them. I wish him well.
“They need to get a top manager in to get a grip of the dressing room.”
