Manchester City youngster Claudio Echeverri is expected to miss the remainder of the Club World Cup after picking up an ankle injury during their dominant 6-0 win over Al-Ain, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The 19-year-old Argentine, who had impressed with a goal from a free kick in the first half, was substituted at halftime and did not return. Guardiola later revealed that the injury was more serious than first thought.

“He has some problems with his ankle,” said Guardiola. “It’ll be two or three weeks out unfortunately. I feel so sorry for him.”

Echeverri’s injury comes at a frustrating time for both the player and the team. The teenager had been gaining momentum, showcasing why City were excited to bring him in from River Plate earlier this year. Sunday’s goal was his first for the club and he was expected to feature in the knockout stages.

City have already secured a place in the next round after winning both of their opening games, but they still have a chance to top Group G. They go into their final group game against Juventus level on points with the Italian side, but behind on goal difference. The winner of the group is likely to avoid a tough round of 16 meeting with Group H leaders Real Madrid.

Guardiola will likely rotate his side against Juventus, with qualification already assured and most players not up to full fitness.

City’s medical staff will continue to assess Echeverri’s condition, but the timeline shared by Guardiola suggests a return only after the Club World Cup concludes.
