Serhou Guirassy scored a hattrick to give the home side a second-leg victory, but it was ultimately not enough as Barcelona advance to the semifinals.

Borussia Dortmund managed a 3-1 victory over Barcelona in a keenly contested game at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.

The German side started the game positively and soon went ahead in the 11th minute when Pascal Gross was upended in the box by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, and Serhou Guirassy converted the resultant penalty with an audacious panenka.

The Guinean got his and Dortmund’s second just after the restart, finishing off a headed pass from Ramy Bensebaini. However, Barcelona soon got a goal when Bensebaini finished past his own goalie at the other end of the pitch, after Fermin Lopez’s low cross had put him under pressure with Robert Lewandowski lurking just inches away.

After the goal, Barcelona became more assured and passed the ball with much more confidence. Ultimately, the huge deficit from the first leg proved too much to overturn. Guirassy completed his hattrick with 15 minutes remaining on the clock, but it was too little, too late.

Barcelona now advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2019, where they will face either Bayern Munich or Inter Milan.
