Borussia Dortmund delivered a statement performance on Sunday, defeating Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 at the BayArena in a match that not only spoiled Xabi Alonso’s farewell home game but also reignited their hopes for a top-four finish in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen started strong, with Jeremie Frimpong opening the scoring in the 31st minute. However, Dortmund responded swiftly; Julian Brandt equalized just two minutes later, and Julian Ryerson added another before halftime, giving Dortmund a 2-1 lead.

In the second half, Dortmund capitalized on Leverkusen’s defensive lapses. Karim Adeyemi extended the lead in the 73rd minute, followed by Serhou Guirassy’s goal in the 77th, marking his 20th league goal of the season. Jonas Hofmann scored a late consolation for Leverkusen in stoppage time.

This victory propels Dortmund to fifth place with 54 points, just one point behind fourth-placed Freiburg. With one match remaining against relegated Holstein Kiel, Dortmund’s Champions League aspirations are very much alive.

The match also marked an emotional farewell for Leverkusen’s coach Xabi Alonso, who received a heartfelt send-off from fans and the club. Despite the loss, Alonso’s tenure is celebrated for leading Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title and an unbeaten season.

For Dortmund, this victory puts UCL football within reach pending the result of their final home game and those of other teams in the top 4. For now, they look to continue their fien form under Niko Kovac and prepare to be at their best in the final game of the season.
