Winger may not return to action until April
Manchester United winger Patrick Dorgu will miss up to 10 weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury during the match against Arsenal.
The 21-year-old scored a sensational half volley to put United ahead against the Gunners, but shortly after fell while chasing a long ball and held onto the back of his knee.
Michael Carrick was hopeful after the game that it was just “a little bit of cramp”, but initial scans suggest there is more damage. The club are still assessing the extent of the injury.
The news is a blow not just to Carrick and the club, who have seen the £25m signing from Lecce transformed from a struggling wing-back into an excellent, hard-running winger clinical in front of goal. Dorgu was recently compared to Gareth Bale after outstanding performances against Manchester City and Arsenal.
But it is significantly cruel for the player himself, who will be sidelined for two months just when he had begun to have the best period of his career.
Dorgu will likely miss United’s next eight games, up to the international break in March, meaning that he may not return to the pitch until April, when United face Leeds.
“Reminds Me a Bit of Bale”: The Facts Behind Patrick Dorgu’s Remarkable Rise
In the 50th minute at the Emirates Patrick Dorgu combined deliciously with Bruno Fernandes and then unleashed a cannonball that pinged the underside of David Raya’s crossbar and nestled into the corner of the net.
The sweet passing sequence before the goal, the control with the knee and hips, the half-volley to send it crashing in off the bar, these all combine to epitomise the level at which Dorgu is current performing.
