Italy international is happy “because competition is good for everyone”
Gianluigi Donnarumma has said he is relishing the prospect of competing with James Trafford for the No 1 shirt at Manchester City, after his £30m move from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Italy goalkeeper joined Pep Guardiola’s on deadline day, arriving only weeks after City had signed Trafford from Burnley for £27m.
Trafford had started the season as Guardiola’s first choice, even despite the presence of the veteran Ederson. However, the former Burnley goalkeeper’s shaky performance in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham led the club to bring in a more experienced option, particularly with Ederson joining Fenerbahce.
Guardiola now has a choice to make heading into the season’s first Manchester derby on Sunday, whether to play Trafford or hand a debut to Donnarumma.
The Italian goalkeeper said: “I’m happy because competition is good for everyone. I can’t wait to meet [James], and I can’t wait to meet my new teammates.
“We have to be a strong and united group with people who care for each other and that is the key to success. Together we can make great success.”
Donnarumma also admitted the move fulfilled a long-held ambition.
“Playing in the Premier League with Manchester City is a great emotion for me,” said Donnarumma. “I’m ready for this challenge. I’ve always dreamed about playing in the Premier League, as it’s the best league in the world.”
