Midfielder sometimes struggles but his talent is unquestionable, says teammate

Jeremy Doku has offered his support to Phil Foden, saying the Manchester City forward can sometimes be unsettled by outside criticism but has the quality to respond in decisive moments.

Foden scored City’s opener in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Manchester United, a result much welcome after Pep Guardiola’s side started to feel some heat for losing two successive league games against Tottenham and Brighton.

The 25-year-old was just returning from injury for the derby, having missed two out of three games so far this season and played only 15 minutes in the third. Foden also endured a stop-start campaign last season due to injuries and poor form, ultimately confessing at the end of the season that he was physically and mentally exhausted.

“Phil is a lovely guy,” said Doku. “I know sometimes he struggles when people criticise him. Football is not easy, but he showed again [in the derby] that talent-wise you cannot say a word about him.

“I’m very happy for him, I know his qualities and I know that he will show that to everyone. I have no doubt about him. I’m very happy for him. He deserves it.”

Manager Pep Guardiola also backed the player to rediscover top form.

“We need him so much,” said Guardiola. “Last season for injuries, for other reasons he could not be with us.

“Hopefully step by step he can get his best. I am pretty sure a game like this against United is a special game for him because he is an incredible Manchester City supporter. I’m sure he’s going to have the best feeling.”
