Tottenham full-back Djed Spence is poised to make history as England’s first openly Muslim player.
Djed Spence, a 25-year-old Tottenham full-back, is on the verge of making history as England’s first openly Muslim player. Spence was included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Spence expressed his feelings about this potential milestone, saying, “It’s a blessing, it’s amazing. I was surprised, really, first ever. It’s just amazing. I don’t have the words really.” He was surprised to receive the call-up without prior discussion with the England boss and was amazed to learn about the historic opportunity.
The versatile full-back doesn’t feel pressured about being the first Muslim player to represent the senior men’s team. Instead, he focuses on playing football with a smile and happiness. “Maybe, maybe not. I don’t really feel the pressure for certain things. I just play football with a smile on my face, be happy, and the rest will take care of itself.”
Spence’s faith is an integral part of his identity, and he frequently acknowledges it on social media. “First things first, God is the greatest,” he said. “I pray a lot. I give gratitude to God. In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has always been by my side.”
When faced with challenges, Spence draws strength from his faith and believes that everything will align itself. This approach has helped him overcome obstacles in his career, including public criticism from former managers Antonio Conte and Neil Warnock.
Spence’s journey to the England squad has been marked by perseverance and determination. After joining Tottenham in 2022, he spent time on loan at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa before establishing himself under Ange Postecoglou last season. His energy and versatility have made him a valuable presence in the Tottenham squad.
As Spence prepares to make history, he hopes to inspire others, saying, “If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it, man”.
