Artwork “shows Diogo sending love out to the fans”, says artist

A new mural in honour of Diogo Jota has been unveiled just a short walk from Anfield.

The artwork was created by Liverpool-based artist John Culshaw. It captures Jota smiling and signing a heart with his hands.

Culshaw said: “As Liverpool fans we know how to deal with tragedy and show our appreciation to someone who has given us so much.

“I picked this image to paint because it shows Diogo sending love out to the fans and by immortalising him in our city, it shows that we are sending the love right back.”

The tribute joins the list of memorials left around Anfield to celebrate the departed forward.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances. He helped the reds win their record-matching 20th Premier League title last season before his demise.

Last week, Liverpool announced they would permanently retire the No 20 shirt across all levels of the men’s and women’s teams.

Culshaw said: “Diogo has given us so many memories. It’s only right that he will remain our number 20 forever.”
