Lorry driver was travelling the same route and says the car was moving at a controlled pace when the crash occurred
A Portuguese truck driver who witnessed the fatal crash that killed Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva has rejected claims that the pair were speeding before their Lamborghini veered off a motorway and caught fire in northern Spain.
Jota and his younger brother died last week after their Lamborghini Huracan left the A-52 highway near the town of Padornelo in the province of Zamora. According to a preliminary report by Spain’s Civil Guard, investigators suspect the vehicle was being driven at a speed “significantly above” the legal limit when the crash occurred. The report, which is still being finalised, is expected to be submitted to a court in Puebla de Sanabria.
But eyewitness Jose Azevedo, a lorry driver who was travelling the same route, has contradicted that assessment.
“You have my word that they were not speeding,” said Azevedo in a video shared on social media. “I could see the make of the car, the colour of the car. I drive this road every day, Monday through Saturday, I know what road it is, and it’s worthless.
“It’s a dark road, and I could see the make and colour of the car, everything perfectly. Later on, unfortunately, that’s how it ended.”
Azevedo said he tried to help in the aftermath of the crash, but could do nothing to save the brothers.
“I filmed it, stopped, tried to help, but unfortunately, there was nothing I could do,” said Azevedo. “I have a clear conscience.
“I know what I went through that night because I didn’t know who was inside. My condolences to the family.”
