Spaniard’s reaction comes amid periods of controversies involving both players

Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen has called for restraint from the media over what he described as excessive criticism directed at Lamine Yamal and Vinicius Junior.

The 20-year-old centre-back, who has quickly established himself as a regular for Madrid and Spain, said both players are being unfairly singled out amid the intense public attention that surrounds Spanish football’s biggest clubs.

“Lamine is a normal kid, he’s 18 years old,” said Huijsen. “Sometimes things get blown out of proportion.

“The same goes for Vinicius. He’s an incredible player and a really good guy, but when he does the smallest thing he gets criticised too much.”

Huijsen also sent a pointed message to the press.

“If we deserve criticism, then criticise us, but many times it goes too far,” the Spaniard said.

Huijsen’s comments come amid periods of controversies involving both players. Scrutiny around Yamal has always been high but increased with Barcelona’s defeat to Real Madrid in October, when he clashed with Dani Carvajal over statements made against Madrid before the game.

Off the pitch, the teenager’s personal life has also drawn media attention. His birthday party drew attention from even the Spanish government itself over the use of dwarfs as entertainers. There has also been coverage of his private relationships with girls.

Vinicius, meanwhile, has faced criticism over his controversial reaction to being substituted by Xabi Alonso in the clásico. The incident increased speculation about his relationship with the Madrid coach and intensified suggestions of a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, although club sources have downplayed any suggestion of tension.

Huijsen spoke about how he handles the public glare.

“Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world so it’s normal that there’s so much talk,” said Huijsen.

“I don’t read the press. I live my normal life, I go to training, I go home, and that’s it. I only post football-related things on social media. Playing PlayStation is what relaxes me the most.”
