Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya praises summer signing Piero Hincapié, saying he’s a ‘great player’ despite injury struggles, and hints at potential league debut.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has spoken highly of summer signing Piero Hincapié, describing him as a ‘great player’ despite his struggles with injury.
Hincapié, 23, signed for the Gunners on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, with an obligation to buy under certain conditions (£45 million).
Raya’s comments came after Arsenal’s convincing 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, where the Gunners picked up their fourth-straight clean sheet in all competitions. Raya himself made a mistake early on, but was fortunate that Julian Alvarez couldn’t capitalise.
Hincapié has yet to make a meaningful contribution to Arsenal, but Raya believes he could be a valuable asset. The Ecuadorian ace has been struggling with a groin injury since his arrival, but Raya is confident he’s a ‘great player’ who will bounce back.
With Gabriel Magalhaes an undisputed starter in the left centre-back role, Hincapié may need to wait for his chance.
However, he could come on to replace Magalhaes after the hour mark if required, or even operate in the left-back role, although that’s well occupied with Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly competing for places.
Arsenal take on Crystal Palace in Sunday’s league derby at home, and Hincapié could make his league debut off the bench if the Gunners have a healthy goal advantage.
