Unlucky? Why Has Curtis Jones Played the Least Minutes Among Liverpool Midfielders?

Arne Slot says the club turned down offers for the 25-year-old in January

Curtis Jones has the best passing accuracy of any Liverpool player who has featured in more than single game for the club this season.

The midfielder is averaging 93.2% accuracy, having completed 1,395 of his 1,497 balls to teammates so far.

But why has he also featured sparingly? Besides the 32-year-old Wataru Endo, no senior Liverpool midfielder has played fewer minutes than Jones.

“He’s played a lot of minutes, not all of them, but he’s also unlucky in the sense that it’s the only line where we haven’t had injuries,” manager Arne Slot said.

“We have a lot of players in that line, but we need these midfielders in different positions as well, and the moment you need that, the line in midfield gets smaller and smaller.

Jones is talented but given his limited game time the 25-year-old was linked with a move away from Anfield in January, and Slot confirms the club were not willing to let him leave.

“Of course, we kept him, and the situation hasn’t changed,” Slot said. “To us, he is one of the 16 players we have available for long term and also in this moment in time.

“[It] would be a bit strange if we let anyone go if we only have 16 of them.”
