Cunha’s standout performances attracted attention from several top clubs but Manchester United have moved swiftly to secure his services
Matheus Cunha has thanked Wolves supporters for “an incredible season” after agreeing a £62.5 million transfer to Manchester United. The 25-year-old forward, who netted 17 goals this season to become the joint-highest Brazilian goalscorer in the Premier League, took to Instagram to express his gratitude to Wolves fans:
“Wolves, what can I say to you? What an incredible season,” Cunha’s post read. “We didn’t get to where you deserve to be, but we did everything we could to make you proud. I love these guys. Individually, it was the best season of my life.
“All of this was only possible because of all the dedication and love I have for this club. I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season, along with @roberto_firmino and @gabriel.martinelli.
“I made mistakes and got things right, but always because I lived this club so much. All I ever wanted was to do the impossible for Wolves. Another one is over. And thank you all for all the affection.”
Cunha’s standout performances attracted attention from several top clubs but Manchester United have moved swiftly to secure his services. The Red Devils will activate his release clause when the transfer window opens on 1 June and have reportedly agreed on a five-year contract with the player.
United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, is keen to revamp the squad after a disappointing season that saw the club finish 15th in the Premier League and miss out on European competition. Cunha is expected to play a central role in Amorim’s attacking plans, filling one of the two advanced midfield positions behind the striker in a 3-4-2-1 formation.
The impending arrival of Cunha comes amid some notable changes in United’s attacking lineup. Marcus Rashford’s loan term at Villa is expiring but his future is uncertain and Alejandro Garnacho has reportedly been told to find a new club.
It is understood that Cunha will wear Marcus Mashford’s No. 10 shirt at the club.
