Forward hails Carlo Ancelotti for giving Brazil “clear direction”
Matheus Cunha says his performance at Manchester United is key to earning a consistent place in the Brazil squad under manager Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian was appointed as Brazil coach earlier this year. Cunha has been selected in in all four international windows since joining United from Wolves. The player has also impressed for his new club, linking up with Bryan Mbeumo as one of two No 10s, but occasionally also playing up front as a striker.
United coach Ruben Amorim has praised not only the Brazilian’s ability but also his work ethic and character.
“Manchester United is a club that should always be at the top,” Cunha said. “I’m grateful to be playing in a side that’s delivering and competing well. To earn a spot in the national team, you have to consistently show your worth at club level.”
Regarding his ability to play in multiple positions in the front line, Cunha said: “Knowing that the manager trusts me to play in multiple positions is important. It gives me the responsibility to be decisive and to always work hard no matter where he places me. You need to deliver and prove that you’re ready.”
Cunha’s consistent selection in the Brazil squad comes after a difficult few years that included his omission from Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad while at Atletico Madrid.
“Every moment in life is an opportunity to grow,” said Cunha. “Not being selected for Qatar was painful, but it taught me to deal with setbacks differently. I’ve matured. The frustration then has driven me to where I am now.”
The forward also praised Ancelotti’s impact since taking over the Seleção, saying the veteran coach has given the team a clear structure.
“This new cycle feels different, even with many players rotating in and out,” said Cunha. “The direction is clear, and everyone understands what we aim to achieve.”
