Forward elated to score his first goal for the club
Matheus Cunha says Manchester United’s squad are fully behind manager Ruben Amorim after the team beat Brighton 4-2 to record a third consecutive victory, their best run since the Portuguese took charge.
The Brazilian forward, who scored United’s opener, praised Amorim’s intensity and credited the coach for instilling belief in the players.
“Everyone has full confidence in Amorim,” Cunha said. “He is someone that pushes us forward. He is always very stressed until we start to win, and then he improves every day. Of course, he deserves this, Man United deserve this.”
Cunha’s goal was a big relief for the Brazilian after a run of nine games for his new club without finding the net. It also broke a run of 16 games without a goal for club and country.
“Yeah, finally!” he said about scoring his first United goal. “Wow. I worked so hard for this. The win for starters, to come in and I’m so happy. But of course, I want a little bit more contribution and then today’s coming, but we win and then everything’s fine.”
Cunha admitted the lack of goals had been on his mind but said it was the contribution to the team’s victories that mattered most. Cunha has been praised for his performances for the club even without scoring.
“We have little actions but when you play in the front you have to score goals,” Cunha said. “I have to have more contributions. But the last time I said this: if my participation is to help the team and then we start doing well, I’ll be happy also.”
“But of course with this goal, everyone will be around me to push me. The guys started to joke and then said: ‘Wow, you can score!’
“These things happen and everyone pushes me and I feel so happy to be here.”
