Shirt was previously worn by Marcus Rashford, who is expected to leave the club this summer
Matheus Cunha has described his move to Manchester United as a “dream” after being handed the club’s No 10 shirt, following his £62.5m transfer from Wolves.
The 26-year-old arrives at Old Trafford after an impressive 2024-25 campaign where he scored 15 goals and provided six assists for Wolves in the Premier League. United confirmed his signing last month as part of their ongoing rebuild under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
Cunha will take over the No 10 shirt previously worn by Marcus Rashford, who is expected to leave the club this summer. Rashford has been deemed surplus to requirements and is in discussions over a potential move away.
Speaking to club media, Cunha said he understood the significance of wearing the shirt made famous by players such as Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“It’s something you dream about,” said Cunha. “I can mention many players that use this shirt. It’s so easy for me. Of course, I think the one that I always think about when I see this number in this shirt for me was Wayne Rooney. He was someone that I grew up to watch him play and I have [watched] many games now.”
The Brazilian also revealed that he had previously swapped shirts with Rashford after a match and keeps it at home.
With Rashford likely to be leaving the club in the coming weeks, Cunha is expected to play a central role in United’s new attacking setup.
The player has resumed pre-season activities with United at Carrington and will join the club on a tour of Sweden and the United States later this month, where he is set to make his first appearances in red.
Expectations will be high, not only because of the transfer fee but also due to the weight of the No 10 shirt.
Cunha said: “Of course, the responsibility is coming, and I hope I can do everything like goals, assists and help the team. It is kind of a very important point for my position.”
