The banner is a criticism of the footballing body for demoting Palace to the Conference League this season
Uefa has fined Crystal Palace €10,000 for a banner displayed by the club’s supporters criticising European football’s governing body.
The sanction relates to a banner that added the word “MAFIA” to the Uefa logo and replaced the map of Europe with a Euro symbol.
It has been seen in several of Palace’s games this season, including their Community Shield match against Liverpool and again during their Conference League play-off against Fredrikstad.
Uefa found the banner to have violated its rules against bringing the body into disrepute, and for the use of words or objects to transmit a message that is not fit for a sports event, according to The Athletic.
The UEFA MAFIA banner is a criticism of the footballing body for demoting Palace to the Conference League this season, after the club were adjudged to have breached multi-ownership rules guiding sides participating in European competition.
Palace qualified for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup last season, but co-owner John Textor, who held a 43 per cent stake at the club, also held a decisive stake in French club Lyon.
The Premier League side were demoted because Lyon finished higher up the table in Ligue 1 than they did in England. Textor has since sold his shares, but Uefa ruled that this was done after the relevant deadline.
