Croatia secured a thrilling 3-2 win over Montenegro, coming back from two goals down to extend their unbeaten run in FIFA World Cup qualification to 17 matches.
Croatia’s World Cup-bound squad was put to the test in Montenegro, but they managed to snatch a 3-2 win, thanks to Nikola Vlasic’s late goal. The visitors had secured their spot in the tournament, but they were determined to make it a memorable one.
Manager Zlatko Dalic had made seven changes to the starting lineup, giving opportunities to younger players. However, it was Montenegro who struck first, with Milutin Osmajic scoring after just three minutes. The lead was doubled 14 minutes later, as Nikola Krstovic’s low drive beat Dominik Livakovic.
Croatia’s response was immediate, with Ivan Perisic scoring a penalty, awarded after a VAR check, to pull one back before halftime. The second half saw Croatia dominate possession, but Montenegro remained a threat on the counter-attack.
The turning point for Croatia came with 17 minutes remaining, as Petar Musa’s shot was deflected, and Kristijan Jakic pounced to equalize. The game was on a knife’s edge, with both teams pushing for the winner.
Luka Modric came on to make his 194th cap, and the experienced midfielder helped Croatia take control. The winner came in the 87th minute, as Vlasic’s 20-yard shot flew into the net, securing a dramatic win for the visitors.
Montenegro’s manager, Mirko Vucinic, will be disappointed with the missed opportunity to end the campaign on a high. Croatia, on the other hand, can look forward to next summer’s tournament, with their unbeaten run stretching to 17 matches.
