Tottenham captain Cristian Romero is facing an extended suspension after being charged by the FA for failing to leave the field and acting aggressively towards the referee.

Cristian Romero, Tottenham’s captain, is in trouble with the Football Association (FA) after being sent off against Liverpool last Saturday. He received a second yellow card for kicking out at Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, leaving Spurs down to nine men.

The 27-year-old Argentina centre-back had already been booked for dissent after complaining about a push by Hugo Ekitike when Liverpool scored their second goal. Romero’s red card means he’ll miss Sunday’s match against Crystal Palace, but he now faces additional punishment and a longer ban if found guilty.

The FA has charged Romero with failing to leave the field promptly and behaving aggressively towards the match referee. He has until January 2 to respond to the charge.

“It’s alleged that he acted in an improper manner by failing to promptly leave the field of play and/or behaving in a confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the match referee after being sent off in the 93rd minute,” said an FA statement.

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank is backing Romero, saying he’s a passionate player who sometimes gets carried away. “I have a player that is extremely passionate, and if you have a passionate player then you need to go to the line sometimes,” Frank said.

Frank also criticized referee John Brooks for sending Romero off, saying there was a “massive mistake” on the pitch. “Two hands on the back by Ekitike. I don’t understand how he didn’t see it,” Frank added.
