Cremonese joins Pisa and Sassuolo in securing promotion to Serie A

Cremonese has made a triumphant return to Serie A after a two-year absence, following a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Spezia in the second leg of their playoff final on Sunday.

The Lombardy club, relegated in 2023, will now join Pisa and Sassuolo in returning to the Italian top flight, taking the places of Empoli, Venezia, and Monza, who were relegated at the end of the season.

The match was a thrilling conclusion to the playoff series, with Cremonese securing promotion after a goalless first leg on Thursday. Manuel De Luca’s double and Michele Collocolo’s goal gave Cremonese a 3-0 lead, but Spezia staged a late rally with Francesco Pio Esposito and Luca Vignali scoring.

Despite the intense finale, Cremonese held on to secure promotion. This win marks a remarkable turnaround for Cremonese, which last played in Serie A in the 2022-23 season.

Cremonese manager Giovanni Stroppa expressed his pride and satisfaction with the team’s achievement, saying, “This season will be remembered for all we achieved: with sheer determination and plenty of drive, we secured promotion.” Stroppa’s comments reflect the team’s resilience and commitment to excellence, which ultimately led to their success.

The win is a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication, and fans can look forward to seeing their team compete in the top flight once again.

Serie B champion Sassuolo and Filippo Inzaghi’s Pisa had already secured promotion after finishing 1-2 in the second division.

With Cremonese joining them in Serie A, the stage is set for an exciting new season in Italian football. The three promoted teams will look to make their mark in the top flight, while Spezia will regroup and aim for promotion in the future. As the transfer window opens, Cremonese will likely look to strengthen their squad to compete with the best teams in Serie A.
