Former Chelsea star Gus Poyet believes Cole Palmer needs to leave the club to win the Ballon d’Or.

Gus Poyet, a former Chelsea star, has made a bold claim that Cole Palmer needs to leave the club if he wants to win the Ballon d’Or. Palmer finished eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings this year, despite having a good season with Chelsea.

Poyet’s comments come after Palmer’s impressive performances in the Conference League and Club World Cup finals, where he was named man of the match in both competitions.

Poyet believes that playing for a top European club like Real Madrid is crucial to winning the Ballon d’Or. He cited Jude Bellingham’s success at Real Madrid as an example, saying that the club’s stature and reputation can help elevate a player’s profile and increase their chances of winning the award. “100%, no doubt,” Poyet said when asked if Palmer needs to leave Chelsea to win the Ballon d’Or.

Poyet also expressed his doubts about the fairness of the Ballon d’Or voting process, claiming that voters tend to favor players from top leagues like La Liga. He believes that Lamine Yamal wouldn’t have won the award if he played in the Premier League, highlighting the perceived bias in the voting process.

Palmer has been open about his ambition to win the Ballon d’Or, and Poyet’s comments will likely fuel the debate about the player’s future at Chelsea. Despite signing five new attackers, Chelsea are still reliant on Palmer to make things happen on the pitch. However, Poyet believes that Palmer’s current club may not be enough to take him to the top.

Chelsea’s sporting director, Paul Winstanley, has previously expressed his confidence in Palmer’s abilities, saying that he can win the Ballon d’Or one day. Winstanley praised Palmer’s maverick personality and creativity on the pitch, which could serve him well in his pursuit of individual awards.

As Palmer continues to develop as a player, the question remains whether he can achieve his goal of winning the Ballon d’Or with Chelsea or if he needs to make a move to a bigger club to increase his chances. With his contract running until 2033, Chelsea may have a strong negotiating position if Palmer does decide to explore his options in the future.
