Cristian Chivu praises Inter’s youth academy after Coppa Italia win over Torino, insisting squads can improve without January signings.
Cristian Chivu was quick to highlight the value of Inter’s youth system after the Nerazzurri edged past Torino in the Coppa Italia, insisting progress does not always require new signings.
Speaking after the 2-1 quarter-final win, the Inter coach stressed that internal development can be just as important as activity in the transfer market.
Inter rotated heavily for the tie, handing full debuts to youth team prospects Matteo Cocchi and Issiaka Kamate. The latter made an immediate impact, supplying the assist for Ange-Yoan Bonny’s opener, before Andy Diouf doubled Inter’s advantage shortly after the restart. Torino responded through Sandro Kulenovic, but a late equaliser from Matteo Prati was ruled out for offside.
“I’m satisfied with the performance and the energy we showed,” Chivu told reporters joking that he would not be handing out player ratings. He acknowledged the tension after Torino pulled a goal back, but felt Inter largely kept control of the contest despite the pressure in the closing stages.
Apart from Cocchi and Kamate, Chivu reserved special praise for the wider youth setup, naming several prospects progressing through the ranks and commending Under-23 coach Stefano Vecchi for his work. He stressed that the academy continues to produce players capable of contributing at senior level throughout the season.
Inter made no additions during the January transfer window, despite injury concerns, but Chivu remained unfazed. “You can improve a squad without bringing in new players,” he said, pointing to the reliability and readiness of the Under-23 talents as proof that depth can come from within.
The victory sets up a Coppa Italia semi-final against either Napoli or Como, while Inter remain top of Serie A and are preparing for Champions League play-offs against Bodo/Glimt.
