Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu backs Alessandro Bastoni following criticism after Italy’s World Cup playoff defeat and red card.
Cristian Chivu has defended Alessandro Bastoni following criticism after the defender’s red card in Italy’s World Cup playoff defeat.
The Inter Milan centre-back had already faced scrutiny from Italian media after a controversial incident in a victory over Juventus, where he was accused of diving to help get Pierre Kalulu sent off.
The pressure increased during the international break when Bastoni committed a last-man foul that reduced Italy to 10 men in their playoff clash in Bosnia. The match eventually went to penalties, where Italy were eliminated.
Chivu, however, praised the defender’s character, insisting that respect from teammates matters more than outside criticism. He highlighted Bastoni’s willingness to step up and represent his country despite the difficult circumstances.
The Inter boss also revealed that Bastoni had recently dealt with injury issues but still made himself available for national duty. Chivu described the defender’s decision to play after a physically challenging period as a sign of responsibility and courage.
Chivu further criticised what he described as double standards in media coverage, arguing that incidents involving Inter often attract greater scrutiny, while decisions that go against the club receive less attention.
He also praised young forward Pio Esposito, who missed a penalty in the shootout, commending his bravery for volunteering to take a spot kick. Inter remain top of the Serie A table, six points ahead of AC Milan as they prepare for the next stage of the title race.
