Forward joined the Premier League champions last summer in a surprise £10 million move

Federico Chiesa says he’s not ruling out a future return to Juventus, but for now his priority is reigniting his career at Liverpool after a frustrating debut campaign in England.

The Italy international joined the Premier League champions last summer in a surprise £10 million move after being deemed surplus to requirements by then-Juventus coach Thiago Motta.

Chiesa’s time on Merseyside has been quiet: just six league appearances, all off the bench, totalling 104 minutes. His only Premier League start came on the final day of the season against Crystal Palace at Anfield, with the title already secured.

Still, the 26-year-old refuses to view the experience as a misstep. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chiesa acknowledged that decisions about his future will be made this summer, but insists he remains committed to making an impact at Anfield.

“It will be an issue to be addressed in the summer,” Chiesa said. “Me, my agent and my family have a very good relationship with Liverpool.

“The goal is to be ready for pre-season, then we will look for the best solution for everyone. I did a season in the Premier League without playing much, but that’s okay. A lot depended on the preparation and the fact that I had to settle in. I have all the credentials to return to my past levels.”

The winger, who played a vital role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, didn’t hide his disappointment over how things ended at Juventus. He revealed that he was told directly by Motta he was no longer wanted, only for the coach to depart Turin himself before completing a single season.

“No, why should I regret leaving?” Chiesa said. “I was never offered a contract renewal. There had been contacts to talk about it after the Euros, but then nobody heard from them.

“When I returned after the holidays, I immediately spoke to Thiago Motta, who told me loud and clear: ‘You are not part of the project, look for a team.’

“Motta didn’t want me anymore. I am a professional. I accepted and continued to train to look for another team.

“It was a great regret because I care a lot about Juventus and I thought I could still give them a lot. I was at Juventus for four years and I always behaved well, but it was their choice.

“Returning one day? Never say never.”

Injuries have disrupted Chiesa’s form in recent years, but at his best he remains one of Italy’s most explosive and direct forwards. He registered 21 goals and 17 assists in 98 Serie A appearances for Juventus, following a similarly productive spell at Fiorentina.
