Club wanted the forward to stay behind so the medical team can monitor his condition and prepare him for the season ahead
Federico Chiesa has been omitted from Liverpool’s 29-man squad for their upcoming pre-season tour of Asia.
The club cited a minor fitness issue as the reason behind the Italian forward’s absence from the trip to Hong Kong and Japan. He will remain on Merseyside to be assessed by the medical team.
Chiesa was on the scoresheet for Liverpool in their friendly against Stoke City on Sunday, played behind closed doors at the AXA Training Centre.
The player’s overall involvement at the club has been limited. After joining from Juventus last summer for a fee around £12m, he made just six Premier League appearances, starting only once near the end of the campaign.
The 2025-26 season could be an opportunity for the forward to revive his fortunes at Liverpool. Chiesa has expressed a willingness to stay, but he has to stay fit.
Since 2021 when he suffered a hamstring problem followed by a crucial ligament tear, the player’s career has been disrupted by recurring injury issues.
Liverpool believe staying behind is best for the player, so that the medical team can monitor his condition and prepare him for the season ahead.
Slot’s squad left for Asia on Sunday evening, with matches scheduled against AC Milan in Hong Kong on 6 July 6 and Yokohama F. Marinos in Tokyo on 30 July.
